A Boxing Day Pressie

Just a quick note to share my joy that the hens started laying again on boxing day.

Fantastic news as we’ve all (D, the dogs and even the cat) have really missed fresh eggs.  Definitely need to be more organised about the timing of hen purchase next time so that we’ve got both spring and summer born girls to prevent any long periods of total egg absence.

It’s not the same buying eggs once you’ve enjoyed collecting them fresh and really seeing how happy (for a chicken anyway) hens can be.  Even locally produced organic free-range eggs don’t seem the same even though our home-reared girls aren’t fed organic feed.  They do however get lots of veggies and grass to produce the most fantastic yellow yolks I’ve ever seen.

Think I’m not very impartial on this topic – I just like getting our own eggs from our own hens!  it’s definitely the little things that keep me happy!

  1. I know exactly what you mean. It’s a kind of home-sweet-home feeling to it hehe. I used to get my own eggs in the summer when i spent them at my grandparents. It really does taste better when you know what work you put into making them. Well helping at least hehe. Add a dash of gardening to that for the nice fresh salad and some homemade goatcheese and you’re on the right track for a healthy life.
