There has been a lot of speculation about just what it is going to be be like when it is finally released but it does seem that the Amazon Kindle 4 is going to be a color Kindle. But we are going to see no new release until the end of 2011.

From researching it seems that the Kindle 4 release date may be in 2011 but if it is it is going to be near to the end of the year rather than earlier on. With the technology that will allow Amazon to be able to produce a color Kindle already now available there is no doubt that they will release a color model to compete with the massive number of apple iPad alternatives that are going to be released in 2011.

Color tablets are going to be the norm this year but the technology still only allows for a 10 hour or so battery life. With e-book reader technology now able to incorporate color technology there is no way that Amazon is going to miss out on the opportunity to compete in the lucrative tablet market.
But for now, and for probably the rest of the year we will still be able to buy the Kindle 3 for a great low price. Still the best e-book reader on the market by a very large margin, buy the Kindle 3 and upgrade in a year or so once the technology has been tested and the price comes down.
We are all waiting with baited breath for the new color Kindle 4 but it will probably be a year before we see it available.

I want a greater contrast (mainly more white than gray background)
organizing ebooks into subfolders (ideally to copy all of my directory at once to Kindle)
and a greater resolution, better support of pdf, support of all sorts of other formats, including unzipping,
faster approach to wikipedia. If web in general would be faster as well, enough to read email,
it would be nice, as well as an unbreakable screen.
I can weight a couple of years for color, and touch screen is not interesting for me.

I am looking to buy the Kindle 4 Color. I want one for my husband.
I would like to have the screen be touch with the option to lock it, add still have the current keys that are on the kindle 3. I love the speed of the transitions on the kindle 3 compared other readers. Of course there still needs to be free internet and wifi. I would like to have magazine subscriptions on the kindle. More case colors with actual color not just white and black. One more important thing is to add more memory, like removable memory card.

Please notify me of Kindle 4 release if it is in color. However, before end of 2011 I will buy iPad and abandon kindle if no color is available. It’s good to be coy as a company to keep the customers wanting your product, but then the moment passes. The customer moves on without your product never to return. I’m nearly there.

It’s about time Amazon got smart and decided to expand the Kindle technology. Innovation wise the Kindle as been very stagnant since it released the Kindle 2, other than different screen sizes and some enhancements to the OS / UI the Kindle has not real hardware improvements in 2 years. Any other technology/device would have been left behind last year.

The key here is functionality and Amazon better bring it! Why spend $299+ (my guess on the Color Kindle opening price) when for $400 I can get a backlight, full color eBook reader that also browses the internet, plays games, checks my email, etc, etc, etc.

I love the touchscreen and color screen idea. How about a color touchscreen with a touchscreen toggle button? i’ve grown accustomed to just tossing the kindle around (it seems durable) this would solve the accidental page moving by a kid, dog, or other thing touching the screen. Plus, you could use it as a notepad

I only want a color screen if it’ll be the same e-ink non-backlit display… otherwise may as well get some kind of tablet. What I really want is for the kindle to incorporate epub books so I can use my library’s ebooks. As it stands I’m going to have to get the nook, even though I’d prefer the kindle, just so I can use the library books.
I really DONT want touchscreen. unless there are still the page turning arrows on the side. swiping is a lot more of a hassle than just pressing a button.

I agree with Kelsey about the color screen, if it’s the same e-ink then yes to color screen. Can they do something like that that? Backlit displays tire my eyes. Also the epub books is a great suggestion. I ditto it. I would also like to use my library’s ebooks on my Kindle.
I like the touch screen option but I still want them to keep the keyboard. I also wish the outer case would come in other colors. Not just white or black.

Hee-hee! I’m SO excited for this in color and a touch screen! I’ve been holding out until it’s on the market.
I can’t wait to buy a color e-ink Kindle. I love my iPad and use the Kindle app for books over apple’s own iBook app, and the current Kindle itself, but the glare of the iPad makes it nearly impossible to use outside. If apple is as smart as they think they are, they will sell the iPad 2 with a good matt screen option like they do their MacBook Pro Laptops and then I would’t need a Color Kindle, but I doubt that will happen. Plus e-ink is so much better than a backlit screen for books/reading that i would probably still get a color Kindle, or Kindle 4 even if i did buy a iPad 2 and it had a matt screen option. So please let me know when it’s available.

I like to buy a kindle for reading purposes, because I already own an iPad. However, I will hold off for the color Kindle with e-ink. I do like the text-to-speech that (so far) only Kindle offers. I hope that that could be done in many languages instead of just English (i.e. Spanish, French…). Also, I lie to see an SD slot card, maximizing the kindle to as much external memory as one can buy! I would love a color kindle, as well as a ‘video’ feature that played the video’s soundtrack while playing a ‘slideshow’ of the video. I mean like every 10 seconds show a new picture from that video in order… Don’t know if that’s possiblebut would be great. I personally dont care if there is a touch screen, I just want a color e ink screen. I love my K2 and am currently on it right now. I would love to buy a color kindle!

I don’t think I want a touch screen. Maybe color would be a bad idea too considering it will drain the battery. I just want a different design and faster page load. I don’t like the static that shows up when loading a page. It would also be great if it would have a memory slot so that you can store more books.

Bigger touch screen 8 & 10 inch models, screen should replace buttons. Unfettered internet access both domestically and internationally with LTE. Favorites system similar to that of IE (folders & buttons etcs) if it doesnt have it already. Colour is nice but not too important if it pushes the price over 200us. Dont see point if there are no 30fps capabilities.
There is an absolute need for a replaceable battery. I am not sure if its possible but the option to use AAA/AA batteries or rechargable ones would be advantageous but only if they last as long as lithium variants. The ability to recharge them with the device itself would also be a bonus. This request stands until there is uniformity with lithuim battery sizes or they’re readily available and cheap, similar to cell phone ones. A light round the edges to provide minimal light to the screen like a watch would be good too, should be able to turn it off and on, auto off in day. Dont want a backlit screen because of eyestrain.

Touch screen is the “in” thing, add a locking feature for those of us with children or are multi-tasking. If you keep the keyboard, use raised characters, instead of paint. I don’t really care for the colored ink. I just want to read. Upgrade the contrast. Let me choose the color options for Kindle, besides graphite and pearl. Why pay for a skin to cover it up.

Add GPS (some rumors say the the modem used in 3rd gen 3G models actually has an GPS chip i nthem but that it’s been disables by amazon. eInk reader makes an excellent map reader.
1) Improve the contrast
2) Improve the speed (at lesta ten fold, other colour eInk screens can display video)
3) FFS! add an WI-FI to the DX model already !
4) Add a SIM card slot to the so called “3G” models. Not everyone loves the “free” whispernet which costs 2$ per Mb OCONUS and even then only works with downloading from amazon.
5) Add an EBook format support
6) Improve PDF format support
7) Opensource the firmaware/OS to allow community apps and hacks. It is already 95% made from opensource.
But I do not want touch screen. I want to read books and magazines not dirty fingerprints !

A GOOD IDEA AND SOME VERY PASSIONATE REMARKS:
All I want is a “page forward” button centered just above the keypad. That would let you read past page breaks with only one hand. Paging backward is needed so infrequently that I would not mind having to reach up just to do that.
I don’t want a touch screen. A pressure-sensitive touch screen would be easier to break. A capacitative touch screen would have too much glare. And even if the toggle feature worked well, developers would key on the touch functionality. So you’d constantly have to toggle touch on and off. Using the thing would be a nightmare, whereas now it is nearly perfect.
I don’t want color. In some distant future, where authentic color e-ink is cheaply available without sacrificing the contrast available in monotone mode, I’ll accept color as a fun but mostly useless gimmick. For now, Apple and Barnes & Noble can talk themselves blue in the face about all their studies and surveys: for me and for every single one of my friends who has used both extensively, there is absolutely no comparison, in terms of eye strain, between e-ink and LCD. I want video even less than color. If I wanted an iPad, I would buy an iPad.

I want the the kindle to look and feel like the Kindle 3 but have the color availability that the Nook has. I find the weight difference and the ergonomics of the current Nook Color uncomfortable in comparison to my (now old school) Kindle 2.

I LOVE my kindle. The ink technology makes reading easy and enjoyable. This is especially important to me because I am at a computer all day long and often have eye strain by the time I’m home. The ipad and other devices would only cause more eyestrain for me because of the backlite options. So while I would enjoy the color – I would ONLY enjoy it with the special Kindle technology. The same is true for the touch screen. Please let me know as soon as we hear anything about new developments for the kindle.

I won’t buy a Kindle until it accepts the ePub format. I want to be able to borrow books from my public library. If Amazon does not realize the importance of this, I will buy a Nook instead, even though I prefer Kindle’s higher screen contrast. ALSO I want Kindle’s price down at $100–Then I will buy several for gifts.
I want a Kindle that supports both Eastern and Western characters so I can read books and online magazines in various different languages using the same device.

I want color but with eink technology and not lcd. Also, a touch screen would be cool with a similar or better dictionary function as the nook touch. Don’t forget landscape view capability! please…

I love my Kindle 3 but would definitely buy a touch kindle. If it has color, that’s even better. I’ve looked at the Nook Simple Touch and really like it. I rarely use the keys on my kindle and would be happy with the clean screen look and smaller footprint. I have no doubt that Amazon’s new touch kindle will be better than the Nook Touch so am anxiously awaiting its release. Am hoping that Amazon retains the page turn buttons as an option in addition to swiping or touching for page turns. Hope it’s out soon! Thank you for notifying me of it’s release.

I’m planning to buy my first ereader, and have been looking at Nook Simple Touch, Nook Color, and Kindle. Do not like the Kindle keyboard; buttons are too small, as on my phone. The touchscreen on both Nooks is incredibly responsive. But the Nook Color has very short battery life. I have a netbook for all that a netbook does AND writing, which is my profession, so a tablet seems a duplication . . . and thus the Nook Color isn’t really needed. I’m very interested in whether the Kindle 4 will be touchscreen and/or color, or if Amazon offers a true tablet (heavily rumored) AND a new version of its reader.
Ultimately I’d like a very clear, sharp reading experience in color or b&w, and a touchscreen, and a battery **I** can replace that also features longevity.

Hi ~ I would love a color, touch screen Kindle for my son (Christmas 2011 would be great!). He struggles in school but he loves electronics. A color, touch screen Kindle would bring both worlds together for him! He also loves books on tape and I would like for him to be able to read along with the audio. Thank you!
I love my Kindle 2, I was disappointed that Kindle 3 wasn’t color, so I didn’t upgrade (anyway I am a generation skipper when upgrading my tech stuff usually). When that Kindle 4 comes out I will be very happy if they combine the color technology with what I have heard is a simply amazing battery life on the Kindle 3. I am so interested in the color kindle. Please offer a trade in or something for those of us who have one but can’t justify buying the new one. I love my kindle but color and access to renting books would be awesome!!!
