Things to do in February
- Check carrots, onions, garlic and tomatoes in store
- Save water – check water butts are filling – you’ll want all the water you can get come the summer
- Spread compost on empty beds as produce is pulled
- Tidy up – keep on top of removing rotting brassica leaves to prevent pests and diseases building up.
- Dig over more plots if necessary – it will be spring planting time soon, make sure you’ve got enough space for everything you’re hoping to grow
- Maintain your cold frame/greenhouse/nursery beds – you’ll have lots of seeds going in, make sure you’ve got somewhere sheltered for them to thrive
- Keep some Jersualem Artichoke tubers by, to be re-planted next month
- And of course enjoy the heavenly scent of the almond blossom!
Every year varies according to the weather and what we feel like trying / repeating. and so I will keep updating the list if things change. However the above is the general outline of what will be happening on the veg plot in Catalunya for February. Please let me know if there are other things which vegetable growers in Spain could be doing – Thanks.

When do you plant your potatoes? We plant ours in February – last year at the full moon around the middle of the month. We’re planning to do the same again this year and all the gardeners here seem to do that. Otherwise it gets to dry for them later in the season.
It’s lovely to see your almond blossom – it’s late here this year because it’s been so cold, so we haven’t seen any yet.
chaiselongue’s last blog post..No calm for some / pas de tranquillité pour certaines
We plant the potatoes in the first week of March because that’s what the local’s do and its a nice birthday treat for BigD!
I cheated – that’s last years almond blossom as ours is only just starting. I shall bore you with photos in the next week or so as its one of my favorite natural events of the year – that honey smell, the bees buzzing, it just oozes the promise of summer!
