Things to do in May
  • Earth up potatoes.  Draw soil up around the plants.  This prevents the potatoes becoming poisonous which they will do if exposed to sunlight for more than a day or so.
  • Cook the growth tips of the broad bean plants as spring greens before the back fly stake their claim.
  • Check on all your supports for beans, tomatoes etc.  Any improvements need to be done before the plants get too heavy.

Every year varies according to the weather and what we feel like trying / repeating. and so I will keep updating the list if things change.  However the above is the general outline of what will be happening on the veg plot in Catalunya for  May.   Please let me know if there are other things which vegetable growers in Spain could be doing.  Thanks

  1. Nothing to sow!!
    No, no, no!

We went half and half on the garden – dug up a section and then built a raised bed – look out for me blogging about it in the next week.
But now I want to Plant veggies. I already have Courgettes, Cucumbers and Tomatoes ready to be transplanted into the raised bed, the Lettuce and Rocket I am keeping in pots but what else can I plant directly into my new vegetable bed now? I was gonna sow some Radish because they’re quick growers but can you help me out with other suggestions.
    I’d really appreciate some help.
    :)

  2. Jeni,

Get some of those long icicle white mooli type radish. We had a moment of excitement yesterday they have grown in no time at all into foot long monstor radishes – I was flabaghasted – probably the largest perfect vegetable ever grown in this particular Spanish garden!

Chillis, beetroot, melons and peppers can still go in now. You could try climbing beans too. Don’t forget coriander – you can never have too much! Although its not really onion time, if you plant some baby onion seedlings you’ll have spring onions to eat for months. Your local veg market should have a plug plant person who distributes such goodies for mere cents. Or sow seed but I have absolutely no luck with onion seed.

    Enjoy!

  3. Thank you SO SO much. I was a bit disheartened thinking I was too blinking late but you’ve made me all excited now!
    WooHooo!
    xx
