No Onions? Never Mind We’ve Got a Walnut Tree!

[ad#co-1]

Just a quickie to share my disappointment…

Well we had it all planned a big trip into town.  Smart town clothes (ie without mud or dog hair attached) were donned, gas bottles loaded, car bump-started and off we set down the mountain.

Well the ‘gas guy’ was parked by the river as usual and gave us a nice surprise – at last butano as gone down in price for a change (or did he just get it wrong?).  Then a quick coffee with Mrs T who ventured into town from her coastal residence too and off we three toddled to the loveliest market in the region (if not world – I really am smitten)

So I’m a bit late planting my onions and garlic – normally its a between Christmas Day and New Years Day excuse to limber up outside but what with all the rain I am falling behind on my year plan for vegetable growing already (its only day 3).

Anyway… off we toddled and lo and behold I could see from the doors that Snr Bitem (not his real name) was not surrounded by a queue of restless vegaholics like he usually is on a Saturday morning.  Fab, I smiled to myself and entered the market to purchase  around 600 onion seedlings.   My heart sank as I approached his stall and found him nowhere to be found – no lovely plug plants, strings of garlic and orchids for sale – nada, zilch.  His stall was silent.

So that means I will be even further behind in my schedule, but on the plus side I won’t get back and knee ache from planting 800 (you always get more than you ask for) onions (well 400 let’s face it, its a job to demand company for so big D will be involved) for a while longer.

Instead we’ll be digging holes to plant the walnut tree, medlar, apricot and grape vine we bought instead.  And at last the damp weather has an upside, for once we may be able to dig our holes using a spade rather than a pick and mattock!

  1. The walnut’s in (pick was needed, but still much easier digging than usual), so of course the wind has picked up, in a bid to unplant any new trees immediately – oh well…

Yes, our wind genis are producing some electric for the first time in over a week I think. So hurray for that but no, not so good for newly planted trees.

Goodness, that’s a lot of onions you’re after. I think we bought 200 onions and ended up with about 500, so I hate to think how many you’ll end up with from 600 seedlings!

We too have two sets of clothes: going out and about, and working. I am determined not to end up looking like one of those “campo women” you see in the supermarket!
