Onion Disaster
Well I was feeling very smug that last year we were self sufficientish with regard to onions. We did very well eating them from storage for about 9 months and along with the 2 months we ate them (alright sometimes they were a bit small but hey!) from the garden meant we only had to buy onions for around 3 or 4 weeks. Well, I promised myself the 2008-09 season would be even more efficient.
Disaster – the mild yet somewhat moist autumn has caused a large number of our stored onions to sprout! I can’t believe one of the greatest successes of last year has gone so wrong. As a keen cook I use at least one onion nearly every day so a successful crop in storage has been a real money and time-saver, not this year though!
Looks like we’ll be having to substitute immature onions (big scallions/spring onions) or leeks in many recipes. Oh well it means a bit of variety in the taste of supper I suppose!
Most importantly we need to finish the house so I get my longed for cold larder for storing next year’s crop!
