Snow – in April?

Yes, dear reader we’ve had snow all morning!  Just when I was despairing about the rain it changed to snow.  Last month I was working in shorts and vest, feeling smug about life in Spain!  I was even mean spirited enough to text family to gloat about the soaring temperatures.  I should know better, such bad behavior always causes the temperature to plummet!  This month every container that could hold water is full to the brim.  The cisterna under the living room filled overnight a few days ago, so we really don’t need any more precipitation.

This morning snow!  Everything is too darn wet for it to settle, but it did try.  All the mountains behind the finca are covered in snow.  That is pretty and everything, but I had given all my heavy duty winter clothes (fetching woolly hat, over-sized muddy parka and so on) their final wash of the winter season, ready to be packed away.  I’ve had to get all that winter stuff out again and can only look longingly at all the light summer tops and things I adorned the wardrobe with in anticipation of the summer to come.

Mountain life definitely allows for more unpredictability in the weather stakes.  Usually I like that, it means we get lots of seasonal variation and exciting storms and so on.  But, today I’m just a little bit too cold and everything is a little too damp. I would just like the sun to come out for a bit!

And, I planted aubergine’s the other week and they don’t like the cold at all!  Okay I did put them in a bit early but things had been so balmy it seemed worth the risk.

Amazingly the aubergines are struggling on, the cucumbers though are a different story.  They’ve curled up and died.  I know I should have cloched them.  But the dogs of doom enjoy a romp with anything plastic placed on the veggies.  So I’ve got out of the habit, as it generally results in me finding dog tooth imprinted plastic bottles strewn about the finca for months on end.  In future I will be more organised (I say this to myself VERY regularly) and put glass jars over the cucumbers.  But alas I didn’t want to get my vast jar collection dirty!  Silly me.

Well, it has brightened up now (sort of, the sky is white rather than dark grey and I can even see the mountains around, rather than a thick veil of cloud), so no more whinging – I’m off out in bigD’s wellies to see what damage has been done out there…

We wondered if you’d had any! Earlier today, when the clouds cleared a bit, we could see the other side of your mountain range and, yes, snow on the peaks, so I’m not surprised you had some. We didn’t thank goodness, although it was down to 3 deg when we got up this morning.

oh all my sympathy. yes sometimes the mountain weather surprises can be a bit too much especially when you think you have turned the corner and warmth is on its way.

  3. Ack! I hate it when Mother Nature does that. We are on the borderline between two gardening zones, and depending on the weather pattern, we get Blue Ridge Mountain type weather or weather blowing in from the sea (far away). Snow in April is too much to bear though. Your poor cucumbers! Thanks goodness they are quick to sprout from seed. Good luck!

  4. Snow!!!
    My goodness!
I haven’t got my summer clothes out yet – definitely a bit too cold for me. In a few months time I’ll be moaning how hot it is….

  5. I am not a big fan of snow, but I do feel like its taking a little bit too long to warm up these days, hehe. I can’t wait for summer to come already!
